Choosing a therapist
As you will see from an internet search, there are lots of counsellors and psychotherapists based in Kentish Town (NW5), and lots more in the surrounding areas of Camden, Tufnell Park, Gospel Oak, Chalk Farm, Archway, Highgate, Belsize Park, Holloway, Hampstead, North London. (NW5, NW1, N7, N19, NW3, N6). As a result, after reading a number of profiles, it's easy to be left feeling overwhelmed and confused. The best way to find the right therapist for you is to meet two or three and make a decision based on who you felt best understood your problem and gave you the clearest idea of how they could help you. This can make finding the right therapist expensive so , in consideration of this, I charge half my usual session rate for our initial meeting. In the process of choosing a therapist online, the first thing to check is that they are registered with a professional body such as the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) or the UKCP. This ensures they abide by a strict code of ethics. Then comes the job of reading the profiles. If you know what therapeutic approach you prefer this can be a way of narrowing the field. Some people, however, quite understandably, don’t know which therapeutic approach is the best fit to help them with their problem. In this case, I would suggest either doing some research or choosing to see an 'integrative' counsellor or psychotherapist who, once they understand your problem(s), is trained to be able to draw on a ‘toolbox’ of approaches and techniques that will help you best. Also, make sure your therapist lists your issues among those the she or he has worked with before. As well as the above, you are naturally likely to be drawn to faces that you like, and visual cues that include ethnicity, age, gender and style. Further considerations may, of course, be price, location and experience or specialism. I would welcome a meeting with you to discuss your situation. However, if I don't seem like a therapist you would consider working with, I wish you the best of luck in finding a few contenders, before settling on the right one for you.
